Learning to ride is absolutely transformative. I was a reluctant horseman (having the decision made for me—sort of). But, now I have a story about learning to ride on a one-eyed horse named Lonergan. That guy messed with me every time… until I relaxed a bit and got things right.
My humble advice… Take the plunge!

I love that you remember your horse’s name! Horses are quite wise and I have some ‘professionals’ in my riding school that can spot a beginner from 100 yards away. Good for you for giving it a shot and thanks so much for the kind words and support.

It has been 9 years since I started riding as an adult. I was 45 years old when I joined a ladies group at Harrogate Hills. I’m so glad I made that decision. With 4 kids and a mortgage, I didn’t have much money or time to spend on recreation. I remember asking if I could start by riding every other week. It took me years to collect the gear. Now I ride as much as I can. So if I’m going to buy a new coat it might as well be something I can wear to the barn. My husband says my car smells like a horse but I don’t even notice. I am transformed! Thanks for the inspiration and encouragement.

It was 20 years ago when my 16 year old daughter brought her horse to live at Harrogate hills. After a few months of hanging around waiting for her, because a young girl is never ready to leave the barn, I was asked if I would help out when a group of school kids were coming to the barn for the day. I am still helping out at the barn 20 years later and still loving the horses, I even ride now. Something I never thought I would do. So thank you.
